CSM DESIGN TALK WITH dwp|suters

A new work space that is helping the transformation  of a new, united organisation with a commercial mind and a social heart.”

Designed by dwp|suters and built by SHAPE, this new head office consolidates four separate groups from multiple inner city branches into one new CBD location over five levels.

dwp|suters designed a strong concept based around community and wellness to create a unique workplace supporting cultural transformational change, and encouraging communication and serendipitous meetings.

CSM chats to dwp|suter’s Bradley Schott about their vision, objectives and inspirations for the project.

In terms of workplace design what were the main drivers for the project?

icare is about wellness: of people, business and the community; and their new workplace is designed as an exemplar of WHS best practice to reflect their core values.  Working closely with icare’s leadership our team developed a concept based on the idea of building a community, to create a socially sustainable workplace.

The concept is expressed through the metaphor of a town.  The town supports the activities of icare, with precincts for different uses and civic spaces that unite the people.   Because a town tells its story through the main street, the main street of icare is structured as shop windows.  These settings and the activity inside tell the story of icare and its daily life.

CSM - Planter Box

One of the key objectives for this project was cultural change, how did the design support this?

To encourage a revitalised and more egalitarian culture, bold steps were needed.  Equity is encouraged in two ways; there are no offices, and the main staff hub is located on the middle floor, centrally located to welcome all and ensuring unrestricted access to the main civic precinct.

A dramatic new staircase physically and symbolically connects all the elements together, helping to build the new culture, breaking down silos and encouraging communication and serendipitous meetings.

CSM - Commercial Office Building - Storage Solutions

CSM - Office Storage Solutions

What were the main factors of consideration when allocating storage for this project?

There were two conflicting priorities – a universal desire for “more” storage, and a stated policy of paper reduction!  Between the two of those, the project team decided on flexible team storage located at the boundaries of circulation and work spaces.  Specialised archives were limited and centralised, and are structured to allow ongoing digitisation.

CSM Sydney - Office Storage Solutions

How did CSM’s products respond to these considerations?

The products chosen provide an attractive frontage to the circulation spaces, while the addition of planters provides greenery and additional privacy to the workstations beyond.

CSM Sydney - Rolling Storage Solutions

CSM delivered and installed a variety of storage products for the fitout, including Infinity Tambours, Evolution Sliding Door Cabinets, Planter Boxes and Rolling Storage units (Electronic & Fixed Track).  All products were manufactured in Sydney to Australian Standards

CSM storage and workstation solutions have been implemented into some of the largest Government agencies nationally. For more information on CSM products contact us on sales@csm-office.com.au

CSM CHATS TO HDR RICE DAUBNEY

CSM & Rice Daubney - Novartis

HDR Rice Daubney brings together art, technology and sustainability in this innovative design for Novartis’ new Macquarie Park campus

Novartis is a world leading pharmaceuticals company dedicated to addressing some of society’s most challenging healthcare issues, using science based innovation.  The new Novartis Macquarie Park building has consolidated 500 head office associates across Alcon, Novartis Pharmaceuticals and Sandoz, with the aim of increasing collaboration across divisions with the aim to create a more efficient footprint by moving from three office locations to a single location.

Collaborating with Novartis, Marprop and Ganellen together with Velhoen, JBA Urban, TTW, AECOM, HDR | Rice Daubney undertook all architectural and interior design on the project to deliver a new smart, efficiently designed building.

CSM National BDM Victoria Harris talks to HDR Rice Daubney Associate Directors Rahul Butala and Stefano Cottini about their vision for this project and the creation of an interior designed to inspire workplace innovation.

CSM Sydney & HDR Rice Daubney

CSM Office Furniture Sydney & HDR Rice Daubney

How did HDR Rice Daubney translate the Novartis brand in the structure of the design?

Novartis had teams of highly talented people spread across multiple locations.  They wanted to bring them together into one place, a place where collaboration is not only encouraged, but where it is built into the very fabric of the building; they wanted a building that not only reflected its mission as a company, but that created an ideal working environment.

Therefore we started from their founding values of scientific precision and professionalism balanced and fuelled by people-centric concepts of collaboration and teamwork for the greater good.  The design focused on these two ideas and their interaction.  The scientific finds its expression in the form of the main office floor plates as a simple slender rectangle. This form is then intersected by a very different language of curved forms that shape the core and the spaces at the heart of the building from top to bottom. Within these more human zones vertical movement through the use of 4 glass lifts and a series of relaxed stairs encourages communication and transparency between employees.

CSM & HDR Rice Daubney

In order to achieve the target NABERS energy tenancy rating of 5 Stars Green Star rating, what sustainability features were incorporated in the new office space?

The Client and the whole team was on board with the idea of not “chasing points”, but to adopt initiatives that would create a better working environment.

IEQ, for example, was a major component of the 5 Star Green Star Design rating the building achieved, with over 70% of the typical office floor achieving optimal daylight penetration and access to external views. At the same time internal fresh air rates have been increased by 100% over code to aid flushing of internal pollutants. Along the same lines was the provision of showers and lockers well beyond what was required to achieve the maximum available Green Star points.

CSM & HDR Rice Daubney - Lockers

How did you accommodate NOVARTIS’ broader business storage solutions?

As part of the activity-based working environment, personal and shared team storage is centralised around anchor points. In these areas, personal lockers and joinery pieces with integrated storage are used to create a feeling of ‘home’ within the building and to create a connection point for everyone within the same division, a place where employees can find what they need to start or change tasks during the day.

CSM & HDR Rice Daubney - Integrated Storage Solutions

CSM provided DDA compliant Rolling Storage Units for the project. How did CSM products align with the specifications for this project?

Together with personal and team storage needs, Novartis has strictly regulated requirements for storage of clinical trials and regulatory documents. These have been accommodated in fire-rated rooms at the extremities of the central area. CSM was extremely useful in ensuring these stringent requirements were met to full satisfaction of the Client.

CSM CHATS TO IA DESIGN

CSM Storage Solutions - AAT

The Amalgamated Administrative Appeals Tribunal  is a new one-stop shop for the independent review of administrative decisions made by Australian Government ministers, departments and agencies.

Four departments have now been consolidated and relocated to 83 Clarence Street Sydney. The new offices were designed by IA Design (formerly IA Group) and constructed by BUILT and span 9,000m2 total floor area over nine floors, including three public floors of reception areas, amenities and hearing rooms.

CSM Senior Account Manager David Finlay chats to IA Design’s Senior Designer Tina Cerar about the design considerations for this project.

CSM Storage Solutions - AAT [2]

CSM Storage Solutions - AAT [3]

The AAT’s new offices consolidated several accommodations to one location. What design challenges were amplified by merging four departments together?

The four departments all had accommodation requirements consisting of both public spaces and working environments. While the working environments had a more consolidated brief, standardising offices, meeting and work areas agreed to by the nominated client committee, the public spaces had to accommodate a more varied client group. The design intent of the public spaces is to be approachable hence the use of organic fluid forms moving away from angular lines. A variety of seating arrangements have been designed, allowing the client to sit either alone or with whole family members. Consideration was given to corridor spaces leading to the hearing rooms, what could have been daunting long corridor spaces are broken up, now providing more intimate seating options. An insertion of a new stair also allowed the spaces to flow in a vertical manner adding to the new government wellness initiative of human body mobility.

CSM Storage Solutions - AAT [4]

Significant change management was required to minimise the risk of user concern. How were user requirements considered in the design development and final execution of this project?

Each of the tribunals had very different clientele, ranging from immigrants and refugees, disadvantaged Australians having social security payments reviewed, and government employees.

Significant review of the various types of hearing room was undertaken to ensure that not only standard criteria such as numbers of users, IT and security requirements were addressed, but that the rooms addressed the emotive characteristics of all the different users.  To do this, a number of workshops between the tribunals were established to identify what were critical to the function of the departments, and what aspects of their different work were similar enough to be moulded to suit the proposed facilities.

In regards to the office areas, the changing nature of the department structure required that the office spaces be able to be moved as departments increased, decreased and merged, while still providing the requirements for private conversations that are required by many of the staff members.

Traditionally the staff in open plan areas had isolated themselves with L-shaped workstations and high screens.  Opening up the space required adoption of linear stations and lower screens, and additional measures were put in place to allow staff to vary their spaces acoustically to suit their daily work.

CSM Storage Solutions - AAT [5]

Paper reduction was a consideration for this project. In terms of storage requirements, how did these factors affect the specification of storage?

While paper reduction was a consideration, it was agreed that this was a long term aspiration. The challenge was to consider and audit the storage types of the four different tribunals and agreeing to introduce a standard way of storage across all the tribunals. The specification of the storage was then simplified to meet their current and future needs which made it easier for the storage facilities to be managed both on a personal and departmental level.

CSM Storage Solutions - AAT [6]

CSM Storage Solutions - Rolling Storage

A strong focus of the design was to specify Australian designed and made products in order to support and promote the industry. How did CSM s products align to your requirements for this project?

CSM ticked all the boxes of an Australian home grown business that had developed many Innovative storage solutions in direct response to the design industry and client demands.  The local manufacturing capabilities of CSM  was also a draw card as the project program was staged and challenging. The rolling storage requirements from the client was very specific and varied which CSM was able to help with, by conducting an audit and providing the correct storage solution.
